About Fenistil and how it works
This medicine is used to treat cold sores. It works by stopping the virus that causes cold sores from reproducing and causing blisters on the lip.
This medicine is available as a cream that is applied to cold sores on the lip or around the mouth. Do not apply this medicine to the eyes, mucous membranes, or genitals.
This medicine should be applied as soon as possible after the first signs of a cold sore appear and it should be applied every two hours while you are awake.
Speak to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after four days or if they get worse during treatment with this medicine.
Before using Fenistil
This medicine may not be suitable for everyone and some people must never have it. Check the leaflet that comes with your medicine to make sure that the medicine is suitable before having it.
Always get advice from a healthcare professional before having this medicine if:
- you are allergic or sensitive to or have had a reaction to any of the ingredients in the medicine or to the medicine famciclovir
- this medicine is for a child under 12 years of age
- you have a weakened immune system
Medicines interactions
If you are taking more than one medicine they may interact with each other. This medicine is unlikely to have any important interactions. But speak to your pharmacist or doctor if you get any unusual symptoms while having this medicine with other medicines.
Possible side effects of Fenistil
Most medicines can cause some side-effects but not everyone having the same medicine will get the same side-effects.
The following side-effects have been associated with people having this medicine:
- hypersensitivity reactions such as allergic dermatitis, irritation, rash, urticaria, itching, and oedema
- burning
- stinging
- numbness
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are breast-feeding, you should seek medical advice before having this medicine.
