People can suffer from insomnia for a number of different psychological, environmental, and physical reasons (Refer to the websites under ‘Signposting’ for more information).
Sleeping problems may also result from side effects of certain medications.
Typical signs and symptoms of insomnia include:
• Frequent waking in the night
• Waking up early in the morning and being unable to get back to sleep
• Difficulty getting to sleep
• Feeling unrefreshed by sleep and still tired

Antihistamines such as Diphenhydramine (Nytol) and Promethazine (Sominex) can help to treat short-term insomnia in people over 16 years of age due to their sedating properties. There is a limit on how many and how often you can buy these products due to their susceptibility for abuse.
Herbal sleep aids, such as Valerian and Passiflora, have been shown to have positive effects when it comes to sleep disturbances. E.g. Kalms, Nytol Herbal Tablets.
